The Hurricane that hit the Gulf Coast was one of the most destructive storms to ever touch down in the history of United States, causing collateral damage to the coastal regions of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The hurricane's storm surge caused several breaches in the levees protecting New Orleans from inundation by Lake Pontchartrain. The subsequent flooding of most of New Orleans, a large part of which lies below sea level, resulted in catastrophic flood damage, a massive evacuation effort, and major loss of life.
Recent estimates have placed the damage higher than Hurricane Andrew as the costliest natural disaster in our nation’s history. Over a million people were displaced — a humanitarian crisis on a scale not seen in the U.S. since the Great Depression.
Many Americans overwhelmingly responded without hesitation dedicating their hard earned dollars and services assisting in the disaster relief efforts. Now, the focus shifts from immediate rescue needs to long term reconstruction of the infrastructure of the region.
The policy issues related to the aftermath of this catastrophic disaster only caused more dissension and distress to the evacuees and is now perpetuating lives and families that where displaced. The temporary needs where answered however, there is a serious need for permanent resolution. Our goal is to provide 10,000 homes to aid in the permanent solution efforts and with your help today, we can build a better future starting now.
